My Motivation

My earliest memory is of an evening in our apartment when I was about three years old. There was a cardboard box on the table in the dining area and my parents were taking canned goods out of the kitchen cabinet and putting them in the box.

They explained to me that while we did not have a lot of money, we had a lot more than some other people in the world and they could not afford to buy food. Because we were lucky enough to have enough to eat we had a responsibility to help others in need.

The power of that memory has ruled my life, and I am very happy about that.

My father was over the top when it came to doing for others without recompense. Without much lecturing at all, through his actions, he set an example for me on the virtues of giving and doing the “right thing” with an unspoken humility. He was a certified accountant working for the NYC Dept. of Investigation and for years, prepared tax returns for many families, always for free.Once, he walked about a mile to return change to a store that had over paid him. He balked at celebrating Halloween and birthday parties because they involved “taking ” from others, but eventually gave in to the protests of the women in the family. And my favorite memory, once, at about age 9, while riding home on my bicycle carrying a bag full of spaghetti with tomato sauce given to me by my aunt, the bag broke and spaghetti spilled out all over the street….. You guessed it, my dad had me return to the spot with a broom and dustpan to scoop it all up as it was “the right thing to do”.

I am a sophomore and I am majoring in elementary and special education. I was just recently told by one of my family members of how I used to play teacher with them when I was little when they would babysit me. We think that is one reason why I want to be a teacher and that I love working with children.
